About Us

Amazon Focus

Is a nonprofit organization generating hope, building confidence and promoting partnering among tribal nations and those who care about them in the Amazon and Lowland region of South America.

How We Started

The “invisible” people living under the trees of the great Amazon rainforest were Paulo Johnson’s family from the time he was eight years old. Growing up with tribal children as his best friends, he learned from them the “science of survival in the jungle” while becoming acutely aware of the “psyche of oppression” under which their tribe (and many like them) had lived since the era of the Spanish Conquistadors.

Watching the liberating freedom from fear of the spirit-world, and the newfound hope that many in his tribe experienced as they understood and believed the gospel of Jesus Christ, influenced Paulo to dedicate his life to bringing this Good News to tribal people across the Amazon region.

Out of this passion emerged AMAZON FOCUS, which has been a catalyst for paradigm shift toward partnering and indigenous empowerment in the Amazon since its inception. Amazon Focus facilitated the initiation and development of ALTECO (Amazon & Lowland Tribal Empowerment Coalition), a consortium of churches, organizations and individuals with a heart for the Amazon region.

From ALTECO, a cooperative networking movement was launched among leaders from the tribal, national and western worlds across South America – a movement now known as the “THREE WAVES MOVEMENT” or “MOVIMIENTO TRES OLAS” (or “MTO”) in Spanish, which ALTECO continues to walk alongside and facilitate.

Why We Exist

Amazon Focus exists because of the need for...

  • Listening to the voice of our indigenous brothers and sisters rather than making plans for their tribes without input from the people themselves
  • Promoting a paradigm shift from charity-based style of ministry to an empowering, equipping, holistic paradigm of service
  • Facilitating the creation of networks among Christian tribal leaders from across the ten+ countries of the Amazon and Lowland region of South America
  • Encouraging the formation of consortiums of organizations, churches and individuals working among the tribes in the Amazon
  • Connecting resources (educational, inspirational and practical) between the Amazon region and the church in North America

Our Distinctives...

  • Focused on the spiritual health of the Bride of Christ across the Amazon and beyond
  • Periodically invest in other global regions through diverse application of core beliefs
  • Utilize broad communications platform to inform, influence and inspire the church
  • Convinced that a healthy church will embrace and pursue all Biblical tasks issued by God
  • Committed to empowerment-based strategies, as opposed to charity-based action
  • Holistic in philosophy and approach
  • Collaboration is a fundamental thread woven through all our ministry initiatives
  • Function as change-agents, advocates and catalysts for needed paradigm shift in missions

Statement of Faith

We believe…

In the Holy Scriptures as originally given by God, divinely inspired, infallible, entirely trustworthy; and the supreme authority in all matters of faith and conduct.

In one God, eternally existent in three persons, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

In our Lord Jesus Christ; God manifests in the flesh, His virgin birth, His sinless human life, His divine miracles, His vicarious and atoning death, His bodily resurrection, His ascension, His mediatorial work, and His Personal return in power and glory.

In the Salvation of lost and sinful man through the shed blood of the Lord Jesus Christ by faith apart from works, and regeneration by the Holy Spirit.

In the Holy Spirit, by whose indwelling the believer is enabled to live a holy life, to witness and work for the Lord Jesus Christ.

In the Unity of the Spirit of all true believers, the Church, and the Body of Christ.

In the Resurrection of both the saved and the lost; they that are saved unto the resurrection of life, they that are lost unto the resurrection of damnation.
